Senate Bill 382 Passes, What lead to this passing and what’s next for the Bill?

The state of Georgia has found another bill worth passing, as the long anticipated passing of Senate Bill 382 has officially happened. One of the more notable bills currently being discussed at this time in the state of Georgia, SB 382 is basically meant to require a mandatory exemption for a homestead tax for members of school districts as well as the local governments in Georgia. The bill is meant to be a way to retaliate against the ongoing increases in prices, and to ensure both consistency and affordability for house owners in Georgia. The bill has been met with a massive amount of sponsors as more than 20 sponsors have been noted for the bill. February 2nd, 2026: SB 382 is added to Calendar
The first official news regarding the bill this week took place on February 2nd, as the bill was added to the calendar for February 3rd by the Senate Committee on Rules, along with another senate bill (SB 420). The news was officially announced on X via the official Georgia State Senate page, along with the news that the committee would stand adjourned. The post was later added on to by Beau Evans, a journalist for State Affairs Georgia. Evans would discuss more about the bill on X stating that the bill “is the Senate’s plan to crack down on property taxes in Georgia”.
February 3rd, 2026: SB 382 is passed by the Senate floor
Following its addition to the calendar for February 3rd, SB 382 was officially passed by the senate floor with a vote of 31-19 in favor of the bill. Following the passing of the bill, Senator Chuck Hufstetler who was the sponsor of the bill, issued a statement that can be found on the Georgia Senate Republicans account on X. In the video, Hufstetler reassured the bill would “not allow an opt out by local governments” and will “restore the bill originally created two years ago”. The bill aims to focus on the affordability of people all over Georgia, which is a main reason senator Hufstetler sponsored the bill.
