Semory NP Reflection 1, Charity: Water

I have selected charity:water as my organization since it is a nonprofit with the goal of providing clean drinking water for the people across the globe. Their website and Instagram has a strong online presence due to their combination of information, storytelling, images, and the audience’s actions to communicate with the public in a creative way. The organization doesn’t just highlight the water problem but also engages people by means of images and videos, maps, and appealing stories. Donors also benefit from the website as they can track their donations on the map with the water projects which adds to the reliability of the source. Furthermore, the social media also supports this approach since its visuals and stories encourage others to share the experience and make their own contribution. The idea of involvement online and being part of the social media communities supports the idea.

The manner in which charity: water is talked about in the media as well as by various sources contributes to its digital footprint. External sources quite often label it an example of successful digital marketing by nonprofits, thanks to the storytelling made through its various online platforms, use of social media, and high level of transparency. For example, an article on Google for Nonprofits emphasizes how charity: water used digital technology to increase the number of visitors to its website, the number of video views, such fundraising and awareness. Other reports highlight the organization’s ability to turn its supporters into brand advocates, helping in spreading its message through their social networks. This goes in line with ideas of Hunsinger and Hall about the fact that while the identity of the organization is created by it, it is formed via interaction of different parties (the organization, users, platforms, and media). From an Offline perspective, the charity online presence is another example of how online presence can influence offline action.
